Here's some info: Cochlear Implant
Cochlear Implant - An electronic device which bypasses the demaged hair cells in the cochlea and stimulates the hearing nerve directly. The implant provides useful hearing and improved communication abilities to the implant user. It is a safe, reliable and effective treatment for severe- to profound hearing loss in adults and profound hearing loss in children. It works in the following manner:
- Sound is picked up by a small directional microphone at ear level,
- A speech processor filters, analyzes and encodes the sound digitally,
- The coded sound is transmitted as an FM signal to the cochlear implant,
- The cochlear implant sends electrical signals to an array of electrodes,
- The electrodes directly stimulate the auditory neerve fibers in the cochlea,
- The electrical sound information is sent to the brain where it is interpreted as sound.
